Do you know your car's insurance group?

It's one of the biggest factors insurers use to price your premium — here's how to check.

Hi,

Quick one this week.

Every car sold in the UK is assigned an insurance group from 1 to 50. Group 1 is the cheapest to insure. Group 50 is the most expensive. Insurers use this number along with your personal details as one of the main factors when pricing your premium.

Most drivers have no idea what group their car sits in.

It's worth knowing, because:

  • If you're buying a new car, checking the group before you buy can save you meaningful money over the life of the car.

  • If you're reviewing your current policy, it helps you understand why you're being quoted what you're being quoted.

  • Two similar-looking cars can sit in wildly different groups. A Ford Fiesta trim might be group 2; a slightly different trim might be group 15.

We built a free tool that checks any UK car's insurance group instantly — no email required, no sign-up. (takes about 30 seconds)

Once you've got your group number, you can use it to compare quotes from 120+ UK car insurance providers. You could save up to £518* on your car insurance.

That's it. Reply if there's an insurance topic you'd like covered I read every reply.

P.S. If you're thinking of buying a car soon, the tool is especially useful before you put an offer in.

*51% of consumers could save £518.14 on their Car Insurance. The saving was calculated by comparing the cheapest price found with the average of the next four cheapest prices quoted by insurance providers on Seopa Ltd's insurance comparison website. This is based on representative cost savings from June 2025 data. The savings you could achieve are dependent on your individual circumstances and how you selected your current insurance supplier.
